Newbury Park man dies at Dodger Stadium

News Story

A leader in the Mormon Church in Newbury Park died on Thursday night after collapsing during a Dodger batting practice at Dodger Stadium.

Witnesses said Don Hawkins, 64, was standing near the third-base coach’s box at Dodger Stadium when he fell ill. He was one of about 4,000 Mormons on hand for the Mormon Community Night event. His wife and grandson were also there.

Hawkins was the former president of the Newbury Park Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hawkins was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital after paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but was pronounced dead. There was no word on the cause of death.

Two people scheduled for a ceremonial first-pitch event accompanied Hawkins to the hospital, and others took their places as requested by family members.
