One more yard.
That’s all Thousand Oaks High senior wide receiver Richard Mullaney needed to break one of the oldest records in Ventura County history.
Oh, well, one section record, three outright county records and one all-time tie are a nice way to wrap up a career.
Mullaney’s 19 receptions for 303 yards against Oaks Christian School last Friday are single-game county records. His 120 catches — incredibly 63 in his last five games — rank as section and county records for one season, missing the 33-year-old state record by one.
And he tied Newbury Park great Leodes Van Buren’s 17-year-old county season yards receiving record with 1,667.
His 200 career catches rank No. 3 in the county. Not to be overlooked are Mullaney’s 13 career interceptions.
Mullaney hasn’t been the only one attacking county and school record books.
n Nick Isham’s 7,959 yards in total offense (6,023 passing and 1,936 rushing) for Westlake rank No. 3 on the county list behind Newbury Park’s Keith Smith (11,451) and St. Bonaventure’s Lorenzo Booker (9,078).
n Nordhoff’s Kyle Moore set a county record with 10 extra-point kicks in one game.
n With three field goals and seven extra points in St. Bonaventure’s regular-season finale, Brandon Rominger set a county record with 16 kick-scoring points in a game.
n Terrell Watson of Oxnard set school records for most rushing yards in a game (439, fourth highest in county history), rushing yards in a season (2,905), TDs in a season (38), most carries in a game (50), carries in a season (369), points in one game (42) and season (228).
n Setting Pacifica rushing records for a game (305) and a season (1,338) was Dennis Taylor.
n Fillmore saw Nick Paz and Chris DeLaPaz establish career records for rushing yards (2,912) and yards receiving (1,378).
n With his final-game effort of 315 yards passing, Hueneme’s Jonathan Barnfather became the school’s career passing leader with 4,456 yards.
n Jack Gilliland owns the Grace Brethren career record for yards receiving (2,255) and is within 11 of the career receptions mark. And he has one more season to go. Teammate Max Leffler finished his career with 6,432 yards in total offense and was responsible for 71 TDs.
n Newbury Park’s Jake Geringer finished No. 11 on the county career passing yards list with 6,111.
n Moving into second place on Ventura’s all-time passing list was Keihan Gibbs, who had 4,098 yards in three seasons.
n Nelson Spruce of Westlake ranks among the county career leaders with 140 catches, 2,657 yards and 36 TDs.
n Jake Logsdon passed brother Skyler for first place on Nordhoff’s season passing yards list with 2,151.
And then there’s Westlake kicker Alex Ball.
Ball ranks No. 2 all-time in the county for career extra-point kicks (143) and career kick-scoring points (185). Derek Kirk, who kicked for St. Bonaventure from 2006 to 2008, owns the both records with 156 and 192, respectively.
Not only does Ball have one more game — at least — this season, the Westlake kicker has the whole 2011 season to break both and approach state records as well.
